About

Welcome!

This is my United States Political Systems Creation Project website. I have chosen to research the legal area of the freedom of speech. My research spans from the liberty’s origins to the reach of its protections as decided by numerous Supreme Court cases. Here are my questions that will guide my research as I attempt to answer them to the best of my abilities.

  1. What are the parameters that federal courts have used to validate the limiting free speech?
  2. To what extent does the Bill of Rights protect the free speech of its citizens?
  3. What are the different interpretation of the scope of the 1st amendment regarding free speech?
  4. Since the ratification of the Bill of Rights, has the Supreme Court tended to expand or limit free speech?
  5. What do experts consider the most consequential cases concerning Free Speech rights?
  6. Was the inclusion of free speech as a liberty in the Bill of Rights a consequence of colonial paranoia against another potential government tyranny?
  7. Do periods of war and peace affect general public opinion regarding free speech?
  8. How does free speech apply to technological innovations in communication, such as social media?
  9. Is the debate around free speech a partisan issue or generational issue? And why?
  10. What is the significance of free speech within a democracy? Is it a requirement within a legitimate democracy?
  11. Does free speech only apply to interactions between citizens and the government or does it also extend to between citizens, or between a citizen and a private institution?

Wish me luck!
